Training to become an authorised eye examiner.
How do you become an eye examiner?
You need to complete a training programme to become an authorised eye examiner. The training follows established requirements and is carried out together with a supervisor who is an authorised eye examiner. The requirements are set by NEEC. Cases must be documented continuously and signed by the supervisor or another authorised eye examiner.
How long does the training take?
The training time varies, normally between 4–10 years, depending on how much you are able to invest in the training and in attending cases and eye examinations with eye veterinarians.
How does the examination work?
A partial exam, the slide test, can be taken once you have reached 750 eye cases. The slide test is offered annually at the Nordic eye meeting. When the training plan is complete, you contact the Swedish representative in NEEC for an examination date. The examination consists of a written and a practical part.

- A supervisor who is an authorised eye examiner
- Membership in SSVO
- An application to the aspirant training
Requirements during the training
- Membership in SSVO (fee currently SEK 500, paid for the calendar year in January).
- Payment of the annual aspirant fee (currently SEK 3000) in January.
- Documentation of eye examination cases with your supervisor or another authorised eye examiner or diplomate.
- Attendance at the SSVO annual meeting.
- Documentation of courses (see NEEC specification).
- Annual reporting in January of the number of cases, approved courses and meeting attendance to the NEEC representative.
